Student Teams: Midnight Sun

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

Founded in 1988, Midnight Sun is a student-run organization that designs and builds solar cars to compete in races around the world. As the largest student design team at the University of Waterloo, we welcome students from every faculty. This unique mix of talents and skills results in an ambitious team that showcases the diverse abilities of the students at the University of Waterloo.

With 25 years of experience in building and racing solar cars, our team provides hands-on experience and opportunities to be innovative, allowing students to develop their creative, technical, and leadership skills. From conception to track testing, every step in creating the solar car allows students to practical experience beyond what can be attained in a classroom setting.

We have been featured on the Discovery Channel, TSN, and many other news programs. Our team also holds a Guinness World Record. In 2004, our seventh-generation solar car set the world record for longest travelled distance by a solar car. The car travelled a distance of 15 070 km through Canada and the United States.

This fall is an exciting time for our team because our entire car is being re-designed! Our 11th generation car design will be the first to have two seats, and the aerobody will be the first to be built as a carbon fibre monocoque.
