Conferences and MOVEMBER!!!

Hello again! Just finished off a busy month attending two awesome and informative conferences: ESSCO PM and CFES PM.

Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) PM was held in Halifax, and one of the most interesting topics that was discussed at that conference was the new International Engineering Competition (IEC). This year, the winner of the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) will be attending the IEC to compete against teams from the United States, Europe and possibly Australia! Next, the CFES will be working on a survey and report with Engineers Canada asking, “Are what engineering students learning in school relevant to the real world?”. This topic is an extension of last year’s report about how professional development, such as communication skills, is taught in schools across Canada. You will be hearing from myself (or the new VP External) some more information on how and why we should fill out this survey, and about the survey itself. Lastly, at this conference a motion passed to completely change the executive structure of CFES. If you are interested, please email or come talk to me in the office.

Now it is your chance attend a conference in November! The first conference is Professional Engineers of Ontario Student Conference (PEOSC) on November 2-4. This is a professional development conference where you can learn how to become a professional engineer and network with professional engineers across Ontario. For more information visit www.peosc.org.  The second conference is National Conference of Women in Engineering (NCWIE). This conference is for both men and women and is November 16-18, learn more at ncwie.cfes.ca. To get more information on both of these conferences, please go to the Engineering Society website and apply! For NCWIE, head to engsoc.uwaterloo.ca/ncwie2012 and for PEOSC, engsoc.uwaterloo.ca/PEOSC2012.

Lastly, MOVEMBER MOVEMBER MOVEMBER! This year it is going to be bigger than ever while supporting the fight against cancer. There are two things you can do right now to help support this awesome initiative. First, join the UW ENGSOC 2012 team on the Movember website! Second, Book November 1st from 7pm-10pm off because there is going to be a fantastic Movember launch party in POETS. This party will be licensed  and will have cookies and milk (to make milk moustaches). I hope everyone had a fantastic long weekend, and are ready for midterms!

Love,
Lisa
