Student Teams: Glow

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

The Glow Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity is a service of the Federation of Students (Feds) geared towards improving the lives of LGBTQ+ students at Waterloo.
Transitioning into university life can be difficult, especially if you are struggling with your sexuality or gender identity. The Glow Centre offers a safe space for queer and trans students, as well as their allies, to gather and socialize. We are open every weekday. You can come in, relax, meet new friends, play a board game, borrow a book from our library, watch a DVD from our collection or try to study (studying is rarely successful in the Centre, we have too much fun).
In addition to the social hours the Centre holds, we have peer support hours during which anyone can drop in and speak to one of our volunteers one-on-one. Peer support appointments can also be made by emailing glow@glow.feds.ca.
As well, we host a number of events throughout the term. We have weekly events such as board game night and movie night. Some of our other events in the Fall term include our Drag Show, a speaker series, Coming Out Week and Trans Awareness Week.
Additionally, Glow works to advocate for the inclusion of queer and trans students on campus. If you are having any issues related to your sexuality or gender identity Glow is here to help.
The Centre is located in the Student Life Centre, room 2101 (go up the stairs by the Bombshelter Pub and turn left). Our Orientation Week hours are Monday to Friday 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and we will be open later on one day for an open house. During the term the Centre’s hours will be longer. Check out facebook.com/glowuw/ for more information.
If you would like to volunteer with Glow we will be taking applications for the Fall term until September 13 and our volunteer training will occur on the following day. Glow volunteers hold office hours and help with events. First years are welcome. You can apply at feds.ca/glow/apply/.
