What is the Engineering Society?

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

The University of Waterloo Engineering Society (or EngSoc as it is commonly referred to) is the official representative body for all 6000 engineering undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo. It is comparable to your student council in high school, except it has much more to offer.

Headed by a set of executives, it works on your behalf with the Faculty of Engineering, student union, external engineering groups, and many more. It is their job to make sure that you are getting the most out of your five years here.

In addition to the representation, the Society offers many different services and events. More information about those can be found in this issue of The Iron Warrior, as well as on the Society website.

The Engineering Society executive consist of a President, VP Internal, VP External, VP Education and VP Finance. They are all introduced in this paper as well, but as a whole the executive team functions to make sure the Engineering Society runs effectively and efficiently, to serve you all as best as possible.

More important than the VPs and the President is the Council. The Engineering Society Council is the group that makes all of the decisions for the Society, whether that be a stance on how the engineering students feel about a given topic, or how to spend the $60,000 budget each term.

Council is composed of two representatives from each of the engineering classes in school, together sharing one vote. Their job is to attend the Council Meetings (every other Wednesday) and vote on their class’ behalf. They also are to report back to their class about what is going on in the Society, including the awesome events and services that are coming up. Council meetings are open to everyone! And showing up at the meetings is definitely the easiest way to get involved in the Society.

Interested in being a class rep? The EngSoc executives will be coming around during the first 2 weeks of class to run elections for the position. It is a great way to get involved and gain some experience early.

The Society is always looking for new initiatives and improvements it can make, so please do get involved, or just let us know what you would like to see! Drop by the EngSoc office any time and pitch an idea, or just say hi!
