Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

First years, did you read the first two words of the heading? That’s right. This conference is for you and you only. The First Year Integration Conference (FYIC) is a conference run by the Engineering Student Societies’ Council of Ontario, that’s ESSCO for all you acronym loving people (ALP), that brings first year engineering students from across Ontario together to learn about leadership opportunities, ways to get involved in your engineering society, university, and ESSCO.

There are many reasons you should attend FYIC, and since I know us engineering folks hate big blocks of text, I present to you “Top 10 Reasons You Should Attend FYIC”. Drumroll please.

10 – You get to see Hamilton
9 – You will probably get the Friday off work if you tell your boss you are attending a leadership conference.
8 – You get to meet first year engineering students from across Ontario, and you will learn a lot about other engineering schools and their traditions.
7 – You get to stay in a fancy hotel.
6 – The speakers in conferences are inspiring and generally amazing. I will also guarantee you that at least one speaker will make you laugh harder than that time you inhaled helium from a balloon.
5 – Good Food
4 – You get to spend a weekend with me!
3 – Putting Waterloo Engineering Delegate on your resume looks impressive, especially for first years
2 – You might get that push to get involved in something you’re passionate about. I decided to run for Vice President External after the first conference I attended.
1 – It will be an unforgettable experience, whether it’s from the people you meet, the speakers you listen to, the sessions you participate in, or the conference as a whole.

The conference will be on the weekend of January 20th at McMaster University. Applications will be open by the time you read this. So why are you still reading this? Go ahead and apply.

Disclaimer: Please make sure you’re working somewhere close to Waterloo or Hamilton if you are applying to attend FYIC.
