You have probably seen what it looks like by now but if you haven’t, get ready for the all new gaming console coming from Sony: the PlayStation 5! Towering at around 35.5 cm it is a console that’s slightly on the bigger side, but it offers many improvements from the PS4. This includes updated graphics improved loading times, 8K resolution, ray tracing and finally, after many years of pain, games that have frame rates higher than 20-30 frames per second. Also, unlike the PS4, the PS5 will have backwards compatibility allowing you to play hundreds of you favourite games from previous consoles.
But let’s talk about affordability. While the price and release date have not been officially announced, some sources have leaked this info. Right now a PS 5 is looking at retailing for about $499 although being released in two forms; one with a disk drive and one purely digital with a suspected lower price. Again, these are leaked estimated prices and it is completely possible that these may be wrong, but it does give an insight as to how much it may cost. The release date is currently looking to be sometime between October and December of 2020. It’s not too far away so keep your eyes peeled for it!
Now let’s get into what we’re all here for: the games. Many Triple-A studios have released sneak peeks into games they’ll be releasing on the PS5, including fan favourites such as Hitman III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. There are also many exclusive games such as Spiderman – Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West. Below is a list of games for the console revealed during the Sony PS5 Future of Gaming Reveal Event that are confirmed for release in the coming years:
Astro’s Playroom | Godfall |
Bugsnax | Gods & Monsters |
Death Loop | Goodbye Volcano High |
Demon’s Souls Remake | Gran Turismo 7 |
Destruction: All Stars | Grand Theft Auto V |
Dying Light 2 | Hitman III |

Funnily enough even with all the upgrades and games coming out on the PS5, it has received a lot of mixed reviews from gamers. Some complain that prices are too high while others say that it looks like a giant Wi-Fi modem. On the other hand, many are liking the aesthetics of the curves and colour choice and can’t wait to add it to their collection. When you think about it, the design is especially sleek compared to the new X-box Series X that people jokingly compare to a fridge. All in all, it may be a bit of a ways away but the PS5 is building up a lot of hype. Let’s hope its all worth it and get on with gaming!
