Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

I can’t believe that the first month of the term is already over!! It feels like just yesterday we started a new term. I’m sure by now most of you are swamped with assignment, labs, and upcoming exams. However, although school may feel extremely overwhelming, don’t forget to take breaks, and take care of yourself during this stressful time. It’s extremely important during exams to take some time to de-stress as much as possible.

They say that one of the best ways to study is to concentrate on what you are doing for 45 minutes to an hour and then take a 15-20 minute break. Like our bodies, our brain will become tired if we exert it to its full potential for a long period of time without giving it some time to rest! So watch a short TV show, read your favourite book, or just close your eyes for 20 minutes every now and then before getting back to the books!

Some other helpful and short relaxing activities may include listening to music, taking a walk, eating a healthy, delicious snack, chewing some gum and enjoying a small treat. There is a lot of de-stressing advice available to us online, so don’t forget to use it.

PUPPIES!! Did that get your attention? As part of our Mental Health Awareness services, EngSoc will be bringing cute fluffy puppies and/or dogs to POETS on February 11 at 11:00 am. These dogs are in training by volunteers of National Service Dogs, and will be here to make you smile and forget about exams for a little bit.

For those of you with midterms before reading week, good luck and enjoy your time off. For the rest of you with midterms after the break, take the extra time to prepare yourself but don’t forget to enjoy the class-free week as well! When you come back to school EngSoc will be running a whole bunch of awesome events and services which provide a great break from school work, and are an awesome way to meet new people!

As always, I’m always around if you want to talk, or are looking to get involved. Come find me in the orifice, or send me an e-mail at vpinternal.a@engsoc.uwaterloo.ca.
