Super Awesome External Update

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

Hey Y’all,

It is sooo nice to see your lovely faces again, especially when they’re reading my article. HA. So I have a few updates for all you fine people and then I am going to go over my goals for the term.

First of all, not too much has been going on with the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) and Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO) front lately. ESSCO has been gearing up for their Annual General Meeting which will be at the end of May, and A-Soc has a great delegation! Expect a great external report to come out of the conference and it will be posted on the EngSoc website.

Now for some charity stuff. First of all, the charity that we are continuing to support this year is Free the Children. We set our goal of raising $8500 to build a school in India a few terms back and we are getting there!! The Charity Grillfest was a couple of weeks ago and, on top of feeding all of you with yummy food, we managed to raise $867.10 for Free the Children! Expect at least one more Charity Grillfest this term! Another event coming up this term will be the bi-weekly pancake breakfasts (on Tuesdays) from 8-10 am, with the next one on May 31st. On May 28th at 9:30am in Waterloo Park, EngSoc will be having a tree planting party. If you are interested, just show up the day of or email belbeck.lisa@gmail.com for more details. Also, look forward to an inter-faculty blood drive and an empties bottle drive coming later in the term.

Now I have an outreach update for you! YAY. The Outreach Director has been working hard to get outreach volunteer t-shirts made to give out to any students that help out with outreach events. The shirts will help the Engineering Society become more visible in the community as we continue to give back term after term.

Now onto some goals:

I have outlined my goals for this term below and have elaborated on three of them. If you wish to discuss my other goals, please send me an email or stop me in the halls :).

1. Focus on Outreach Side of Portfolio

• During my last term on campus as the VP External, there were 4 conferences that I needed to attend. I found myself focusing more on the conference part of the portfolio and lacking on the outreach side.

• I plan to approach this term with an equal balance between external organizations and outreach initiatives. This will occur through my support for the Charity Directors, the Outreach Director and the UAE Outreach Directors.

2. Develop System to Keep Better Track of Conference Financials

• I plan to work better with the B-Soc VP External to keep track of the conference budget, as well as come up with a new realistic budget for the upcoming year.

• I also plan to work closer with our business manager to ensure she knows where all the money is going.

3. Develop Relationship with UAE EngSoc

• This term, we have established the UAE Outreach Director position.

• I plan to help the directors to give them the resources they need to establish communication with UAE and provide UAE with any information they would like.

4. Continue to Develop External Reports
5. Further Develop Outreach Directorship
6. Further Develop Inter-Faculty Directorship
7. Further Develop Alumni Officer Directorship
8. Thorough VP External Transition

That’s all for now. There will be lots of more information coming in later articles, so be sure to check back. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at asoc_vpext@uwaterloo.ca.
