The University of Waterloo Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team unveiled their 2011 car on March 16, in the E5 Student Design Centre. The team is traditionally made up of 4th year Mech Eng students, with support from younger years and other interested engineers. Many of the components are designed and built as the 4th years’ design projects, things like the frame, front and rear suspension systems, gearbox and differential, and many other components of the vehicle. In every component, one of the main considerations is weight reduction and improving the ease of manufacturing, to increase speed and reduce cost.
The SAE competition includes pre-race inspections of the vehicles, followed by mini competitions including top speed, acceleration, hill climb, and manoeuvrability. The main competition is a grueling four hour endurance competition, to test the vehicles, and the teams, to their limits. The goal of the race is simply to complete as many laps as possible, repairing issues as they arise.
This season’s competition will be ‘Baja SAE Illinois’ hosted in Peoria, Illinois, USA, from June 8th to 11th. Keep checking out their website, www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~baja/ , for updates about the competition and the development of the car.

The Waterloo Baja SAE Team is a group of Waterloo Engineering Students who design and build an off-road vehicle. I think each year the team must design, build, test, off-road prototype vehicle.

Eng Soc needs to stand up for the students over this outrage. Grow up and grow a pair.
