The Warrior Food Review: The New Honey in Town

Co-op has spoiled me with desserts. Back in Waterloo, I was looking for a dessert place on Yelp and came across this little gem. Honey Bake Shop is a fairly new pastry shop in Uptown Waterloo. It’s hard to miss the store decorated with the retro mosaic banner.  The store is well lit and looks a lot bigger from the outside, but inside is definitely a lot more limited. It wasn’t busy on a Sunday afternoon and I got to pick where I wanted to sit.

Apparently on weekends the selection is smaller than on weekdays. The shop carries its own handmade French macarons, however there were only two flavours available that day. They also had a variety of traditional and unique flavoured cupcakes and in-store made gelato. Near the front display there were packaged pastry goods such as biscotties and cookies. Everything was vividly packaged and neatly decorated. Of course you can never judge a book by its cover, but let’s admit we all do it – I wanted to try everything but unfortunately I didn’t end up doing that. After much debate, I ended up getting a raspberry champagne cupcake and a blueberry macaron. The cupcake had a unique flavour, was moist and had just the right amount of icing and cake. I am not about sugar overdose and this cake was definitely not as sweet as your typical supermarket cupcake. I was slightly disappointed with the macarons.  They were handmade in store, soft and flaky, but lacked the flavour and moisture. My friend liked them so maybe I’m just being picky.

You are probably looking at spending around $2 for a cupcake and macarons and about $2-$10 on other packaged pastry goods. Stars are overrated so I will use the iron TOOL instead.  With five TOOLs representing the perfect score, here are my ratings:
