The hot weather is definitely here to stay, so it’s time to pack up the dark colours and heavy fabrics in favour of airy summer wear. There are a few key summer staples that every wardrobe should have.

The first thing every lady’s wardrobe needs is a sundress. It’s the simplest item with the biggest beauty impact. Seriously, what could be easier than putting on a one-piece outfit? With no need to coordinate tops and bottoms or having to bother with belts, it’s the easiest way to get dressed in the morning while ensuring a fabulous outcome. The sundress comes in all shapes and forms, from fitted, bright-coloured styles, to more loose and flowing pattern styles, so there is no reason for not finding the perfect sundress for every lady. For the more curvy ladies, particularly those with junk-in-the-trunk, I highly recommend an A-line cut sundress to flatter your figure. The A-line is my personal favourite because it disguises the bum and thighs and gives the illusion of a slimmer waistline. The sundress can also be dressed up with fancy accessories or be worn casually with flip-flops. And if that wasn’t enough to convince you, even Barney Stinson lives for sundress season. He asked Ted, “What piece of women’s attire most stokes a man’s desire?” to which Ted correctly responded, “The sundress.”

The second summer wardrobe must-have for every lady is a skirt. No, make that multiple skirts. Like the sundress, the cut of a skirt can be very flattering. My personal favourite skirt is a knee-length A-line cut skirt. Longer flowing skirts with patterns make a great statement, as do bold coloured skirts with a sheer fabric overlay. If you want your skirt to be the focal point of your outfit, I recommend pairing it with a matching, solid-coloured, fitted V-neck t-shirt. This will really make your skirt “pop” and is a casual, comfortable look. To dress it up, just add coordinated dangling earrings and a necklace.

One major thing to watch for with both skirts and sundresses is that the length is flattering for your height. Those with shorter legs should aim for lengths that hit just above the knee. Choosing a length that hits just below the knee or mid-calf will make the leg look short and stumpy, and nobody wants a stumpy-looking leg. For those blessed with long legs, don’t be afraid to pull off a longer skirt. Yes, this will make your legs look a bit shorter, but you can afford it. The look of a long flowing skirt in summer can be breath-taking if pulled off correctly.

As for the men, I don’t recommend skirts or dresses. Cargo shorts and light-coloured bottoms are best to keep cool and look summery. The one thing I ask you to avoid is the muscle shirt, also known as a “wife beater” shirt. Some would argue it is the male equivalent of the tank top, but no, it’s sketchy and dirty looking. If your goal is to look like a construction worker or a dirtbag, then go ahead; otherwise, a plain white t-shirt is much more preferable.
