University of Waterloo Women’s Centre

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

The University of Waterloo Women’s Centre was founded in 1981. It was designed to be a safe space on campus for female students, much like the GLOW Centre which opened in 1971. The Centre is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers and is open regular weekly hours for students to drop by on the second floor of the SLC, Room 2102. The Centre is gender neutral, free from political affiliations, and queer positive. The main goal of the centre is to “be active against unfair or discriminatory treatment of women in society”.

The Women’s Centre has an extensive library of informational material, novels, zines, magazines and videos. These resources are free to be checked out by any University of Waterloo student. Many of the resources are also available online through the Centre’s website, http://www.women.uwaterloo.ca/. They also produce their own zine, called Voices of Women, which began in 1995. The content is entirely student written, and is available for free in the Centre. As part of their mandate to promote safety, the Centre provides free condoms, tampons, and safety whistles. Several events are run throughout the term, such as group discussions, movie nights, and larger events such as International Women’s Week. They also run events in conjunction with GLOW.

The Centre is always looking for more volunteers. If you are interested, please contact uwwomenscentre@gmail.com.
