A Fine Farewell to Nano Fourth Years (mostly)

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

I started getting involved in The Iron Warrior in the Fall of 2012. Farzi Yusufali was Editor-in-Chief and I was ignorant to the amount of awesome people I was about to meet over the next 20 months. It was thanks to Farzi that I had the privilege in Spring 2013 to be Editor-in-Chief myself and I really appreciate all the hard work everyone puts into this publication.

In 2009 the Nano-invasion started and thus started the Nano dependence the newspaper has relied on to not only write articles but to copy edit and layout the newspaper. Going through old issues really shows the overwhelming majority of 2014 Nanotechnology students that contributed to the newspaper. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the honourary 2014 Nano, Catherine Heymans, one who has committed so much to the newspaper she gets confused as a 2014 Nano on a daily basis. I also want to thank Elizabeth Celentano for being one of our Student at Large since Spring, 2010 and helping review the newspaper before it goes to print as well as providing feedback when needed.

I won’t be able to mention all the 2014 Nano’s that helped with the newspaper, to be honest I didn’t know all of them, but I do want to mention those who helped me out during my time with The Iron Warrior. I am sorry if I’ve missed anyone, the admission of your name here does not lessen my appreciation for all your hard work!

First I want to thank Catherine Heymans and Ioana Craiciu for their endless support during Spring 2013. I don’t think I would have survived my stint as EIC if it weren’t for you two checking up on me every once in a while, bring me fresh fruit and dragging me out on coffee breaks. I want to thank Farzi Yusufali for taking all my jokes with a smile and a friendly glare as well as asking the crucial question “are you stupid?” when it really mattered. Anjali Gopal, you’ve always provided a great insight into mental health for The Iron Warrior as well as bring awareness to many important services around campus. Krishna, The Iron Warrior would not be as beautiful as it is without your unorthodox way of laying out the newspaper. You always find a way to put a smile on the face of any EIC racking their brains during production weekends. I only have one questions to ask, “you mad bro?” Stuart Linley provided The Iron Crossword for many terms, roping in much of our readership to pick up an issue and providing what was widely regarded as a superior crossword than the Imprint. Wade and Edwards, the elusive duo, have been providing The Iron Warrior satirical insight into the Waterloo culture since Spring, 2011. The newspaper will definitely feel a lot less sarcastic without the contribution of “TopZ with a Z.” I understand that you two are enrolled in 4Z handsomeness now, but you will always be Nano’s in my heart. I also want to thank Alison Lee, Dushanth Seevaratnam, Kevin Joseph, and Ammar Masud for their contributions to the newspaper in the past, you have all put in so much effort into this newspaper. Your hard work will not be forgotten.

Thank you 2014 Nano’s — and the honourary Nano’s — the next 12 months will not be the same without you around. I will miss each and every one of you and The Iron Warrior will always be in your debt. Thank you.
