After experiencing some crazy weather in the past few months, it’s finally starting to look a little like Spring. It’s still too early for picnics, however there are always opportunities to dine under a scenic setting. If you are willing to splurge and travel a little outside of Waterloo, you’ll be in for a treat at Cambridge Mill. Located in Cambridge, Cambridge Mill is a great place for brunches and dinners on the waterfront of the Grand River.  First impressions: clean, modern, and attentive staff. There are two dining rooms; I was seated in the one with ceiling-tall glass windows. What’s nice about this room is that you get to see a mini waterfall on the Grand River right next to where you are sitting. Most of the water in the river is still frozen but the water around the mill isn’t.

Upon seating, I was served complimentary bread with butter. For starters, I ordered Seared Digby Scallops and Steamed Mussels. The scallops were fresh and cooked tenderly. I enjoyed the almonds and cannellini beans served to compliment the scallops; it was a great addition. The steamed mussels were served with garlic, tomatoes, and bacon. It was interesting how the bacon-mussel combination worked with diced tomatoes. Overall the starters were light and enjoyable. For my main course, I ordered the daily pasta; it was ricciutelli pasta with mushrooms, pinenuts, and a poached egg. The serving was well portioned and plated beautifully.  The sauce was light and did not overpower the taste of the ricciutelli and veggies. I think a little more seasoning would have helped to bring out more of the flavour. My waitress was very polite and attentive although it was a very busy evening. Since it was a special occasion, I was offered complimentary champagne at the end. Overall, a very enjoyable experience if you are willing to spend a bit more. Fortunately at Cambridge Mill, you get what you pay for.
