Running Club – Term in Review

Note: This article is hosted here for archival purposes only. It does not necessarily represent the values of the Iron Warrior or Waterloo Engineering Society in the present day.

The running club is fairly young – it only began last summer and then took a break for the fall term. Despite it’s newness, we’ve been dedicated to our runs and routes and have covered a pretty solid portion of the roads surrounding campus.

We’ve circled Ring Road upwards of 20 times, and our beginner group has run through the park so many times the llamas know us by name. The intermediate and advanced groups covered the roads north of campus, along Bearinger and Weber, and all the way out to Laurel Lake. The Advanced group covered upwards of 180 km on our twice weekly runs over the last 2 months alone!

Our group runs were big successes – from 5k time trials to hill repeats along Columbia, doing these workouts together made them pass quickly and (relatively) painlessly. No matter whether we had 2 people show up or 18 together on the POETS patio to start the run, having company on Tuesdays and Thursdays made it easy to lace up and hit the streets.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the pace group leaders for their dedication in sharing their love of running and positive attitudes with all the runners who came out. Thank you to Cailin Hillier, Drew Lemcke, Adam Klett, Graham Stonebridge, and also to Noel McGregor and John Chibuk for helping out on short notice a few times this term.

Thank you to all the runners who came out this term – whether it was only once or whether you came to every group run, it was fantastic to see you, get to know you, and share some time together on the road.

We have 2 more weeks of the running group left before the end of the term. If you’re interested in getting into running, you’re welcome to join us at 5:00 pm on the POETS patio on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’ve got another group run planned, as well as an end-of-term get together, so come on out! New runners of any ability are more than welcome. We can’t wait to see you!
